Washington sets 2031 deadline for post-quantum security migration

WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump on Monday, June 22, 2026, signed two executive orders to speed U.S. quantum computing development and mandate a government-wide transition to post-quantum cryptography. Executive Order 14409, “Securing the Nation Against Advanced Cryptographic Attacks,” sets the first enforceable federal deadlines for upgrading encryption. All federal high-value assets and high-impact systems must complete key-establishment migration to NIST-standardized post-quantum cryptography by December 31, 2030, and digital-signature migration by December 31, 2031. Federal contractors will be required to meet the 2030 standard through forthcoming Federal Acquisition Regulation updates, aimed at countering “harvest now, decrypt later” data collection by foreign adversaries.
