The U.S. Department of Commerce has designated Anthropic’s Mythos artificial intelligence model, also known as Fable 5, as a specialized cyber weapon, triggering stringent export controls that bar any access by foreign nationals worldwide. The move followed a report from Amazon to federal authorities that it had found a structural bypass around Mythos’s safeguards, designed to limit misuse of its powerful bug-hunting functions. In response, Anthropic shut down global access, including for U.S. users, citing the inability to filter by nationality. Senior Anthropic executives have traveled to Washington, D.C., to negotiate with federal officials over the restrictions and potential remediation steps.
