Bakersfield, Calif. Kern County filed a lawsuit on Monday against the City of Bakersfield, challenging the five-year sewer rate increase the City Council approved on May 27, 2026. The county alleges the approved plan unlawfully bundles stormwater costs into sewer fees and seeks relief from what it described as an unprecedented rate hike that begins July 1. City officials approved rates rising from about $247.13 to $475 on July 1, 2026, then by $100 annually to $875 in fiscal year 2030-31; the county states the plan amounts to a 354% increase over five years.
