Google has filed a federal lawsuit in a U.S. District Court against an alleged cybercriminal network based in China that is accused of using the company’s Gemini artificial intelligence platform to conduct large-scale SMS phishing, or “smishing,” attacks. Court documents state the group relied on Gemini’s large language model to generate highly tailored, grammatically precise text messages and phishing websites impersonating banks, brokerage firms, and major mobile carriers. The scheme targeted thousands of U.S. mobile users to harvest login credentials and financial data. Google is seeking an injunction to cut the network’s access to Google services and related online infrastructure.
