OpenAI has disclosed a China-based online influence operation aimed at undermining public support for new artificial intelligence data centers across the United States. In a security report released this week, the company details a network of automated accounts, active on X, Facebook, and local community forums, that spread misleading claims about environmental, economic, and security risks from large computing facilities. The campaign, labeled "Dragonfly Echo," allegedly targets zoning meetings and grassroots groups in states such as Pennsylvania, Texas, and Iowa, using LLM-generated content to localize narratives. OpenAI has briefed U.S. federal intelligence agencies and platforms have suspended several thousand related accounts.
