Washington debates Pentagon, SpaceX Starlink wartime pricing

During the recent U.S. military campaign against Iran, Pentagon officials and SpaceX executives clashed over how much the Defense Department should pay for Starlink satellite service used to guide American LUCAS suicide drones, according to a Reuters report. SpaceX argued the drones were effectively using an aviation-level tier and pressed for higher fees, while the Pentagon initially maintained they should be billed at lower land or mobility rates designed for different uses. Reuters reported that the Pentagon ultimately accepted SpaceX’s higher pricing, nearly doubling the cost of each LUCAS drone as strikes on Iranian targets were intensifying, and that disagreements over Starlink billing later continued beyond drone terminals.
