New York shipyard explosions kill one, injure dozens

A fire and two explosions at a Staten Island shipyard in New York City on Friday, May 22, 2026, killed one person and injured 36 others, most of them New York City firefighters. The incident began around 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time in the basement of a 150-by-150-foot metal structure at a shipping dock on Richmond Terrace in the Mariners Harbor neighborhood. FDNY units arrived within six minutes and encountered heavy smoke and limited visibility while searching for two reportedly trapped workers. About 50 minutes after the initial alarm, a major explosion followed by a second blast injured multiple responders, including a fire marshal and a firefighter who remained hospitalized Friday evening.
