Michigan City. LaPorte County Deputy Jon Samuelson was shot Friday morning in the emergency department at Franciscan Health Michigan City after transporting a man from a disabled-vehicle call; officials say an altercation occurred around 6:45 a.m. and the suspect fired multiple times, then fled into nearby woods where officers arrested him shortly afterward. South Bend and LaPorte County officials said Samuelson was airlifted to Memorial Hospital and underwent about eight hours of surgery; he remained in critical but stable condition on Saturday, according to the sheriff. State police are leading the investigation, recovered a handgun believed to be used and said there is no ongoing threat; the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Sharod Grafton Jr., is in custody.
