Dallas company hatches chicks using artificial eggs

A U.S. biotechnology firm, Colossal Biosciences, has successfully hatched 26 healthy baby chickens using an artificial egg platform at its headquarters in Dallas, Texas, the company told Reuters in a report published on May 22, 2026. Colossal, which specializes in de-extinction research, designed a bioengineered silicone-based membrane housed in a rigid shell to replicate key functions of a natural eggshell, including gas exchange, moisture control, thermal stability and structural support. The chicken embryos, transferred with their yolks into the device, developed over about 21 days, matching normal chicken incubation times. The company is now monitoring the chicks’ growth and health outcomes.
