California family renews challenge to 2011 death ruling

In Vacaville, California, Survivor Season 48 and 50 finalist Joe Hunter and his mother, Patricia Hunter, have relaunched a public campaign disputing the official finding that Joe’s sister, Joanna Hunter, died by suicide in 2011. The case received new national attention when it was featured on CBS News on May 16, 2026. Authorities originally ruled Joanna’s death a suicide after she was found hanging on October 6, 2011, and an external autopsy supported that conclusion. The Solano County Sheriff’s Office closed the investigation a month later, despite the family’s longstanding concerns about Joanna’s documented history of domestic violence involving her husband, former pastor Mark Lewis.
