Pittsburgh, United States – Four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers has agreed to a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of the 2026 season, according to a Saturday report by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, citing league sources. The agreement, reported on May 17, 2026, gives Rodgers a 22nd NFL season and reunites him with head coach Mike McCarthy, who previously coached him during his 18-year tenure with the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers, a 10-time Pro Bowl selection and Super Bowl XLV champion and MVP, also played for the New York Jets during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. ESPN reported that the contract value will be slightly higher than $15 million after Rodgers was considered underpaid the previous year, while an anonymous coach told MMQB that the 42-year-old quarterback “can still f--king throw it” and praised his ability. The signing reshapes Pittsburgh’s quarterback depth chart, which previously featured Mason Rudolph, third-round rookie Drew Allar and Will Howard. The Steelers drafted Allar in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft and gave him what was described as an “unheard-of” workload at minicamp, with expectations that he will compete with Howard for the No. 2 role behind Rodgers. Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said on his “Footbahlin” podcast that the team plans to let the young quarterbacks battle for the backup jobs. Pittsburgh is coming off an 11-6 season and a playoff appearance in 2025, and the move ensures the Steelers will start one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history when they visit Mike Vrabel’s New England Patriots in the 2026 home opener at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 pm ET, a matchup the league announced before Rodgers’ decision.
