U.S. authorities are investigating an alleged $2.5 billion smuggling ring that prosecutors say funneled restricted Nvidia artificial intelligence chips into China in violation of export controls. The Department of Justice and the Department of Commerce are focusing on OBON Corp, a Bangkok-based company accused of running a “shadow supply chain” supplying Chinese entities, including Alibaba Group. Court filings describe Super Micro Computer servers with Nvidia H100 and H200 processors routed through Taiwan and Southeast Asia, where they were stripped of serial numbers and repackaged. Legal documents indicate at least $500 million in restricted hardware moved in six weeks in late 2025. Three individuals now face criminal charges.
