SARASOTA, Fla. — WWSB/MySuncoast meteorologists say beach and boating conditions will be favorable this weekend, but sun protection is critical. The UV Index is Extreme on Saturday, with sunburn possible in 5 to 10 minutes. Highs will be in the 80s and winds will be light from the south and southwest at about 5 to 15 mph. Seas should remain minimal, around 1 foot or less, and rip-current risk is low, so swimming, paddleboarding and similar activities are expected to be safe with normal precautions. There is no thunderstorm threat through Sunday; officials advise sunscreen, plenty of water and standard beach safety. SARASOTA, Fla. — Boaters can expect excellent conditions Saturday and Sunday with light southerly winds around 5 knots, shifting southwest in the afternoon, and seas of 1 foot or less with only light chop in bays and inland waters. Conditions begin to change Monday afternoon as winds strengthen to 10 to 15 knots from the southwest with gusts near 20, seas building to about 2 feet and moderate chop, and a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Tuesday will bring rougher seas of 2 to 3 feet and northwest winds 10 to 15 knots; mariners should monitor the radar and return to port early if conditions deteriorate.

Timeline of Events

  • Last weekend: SRQ recorded 1.59 inches of rain at the local station.
  • Friday: Forecasters noted extreme UV index with dew points in the 70s.
  • Saturday: Beach and boating conditions reported as excellent, seas around one foot.
  • Sunday/Mother's Day: Continued high humidity, low rain chances, warm temperatures.
  • Tuesday: Forecasted drop in dew points into the 60s, relieving humidity.

Why This Matters to You

If you're planning a beach or boating trip this weekend, you're in luck. Just remember to pack sunscreen and stay hydrated. With the UV Index hitting extreme levels, sunburn can occur in just minutes. And while the seas are calm, always keep an eye on changing conditions.

The Bottom Line

This weekend promises great beach and boating weather in Suncoast. But come Tuesday, expect rougher seas and a chance of showers. So, take advantage of the sunny days while they last. Worth forwarding if you know someone heading out on the water.
