Texas expands disaster declaration as flash floods threaten

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has expanded a state disaster declaration to include Victoria and Calhoun counties as severe storms and flash flood risks continue through Sunday, May 10, including Mother’s Day. The move follows days of damaging weather along the Texas coast and comes amid heightened concern after last year’s Hill Country floods killed more than 130 people, nearly 30 of them children. On May 1, Camp Mystic announced it would not reopen this season after a July 4 flood there killed 25 campers and two counselors. Forecasters warn of up to 5 inches of rain, damaging winds, and hail as a final cold front approaches.
