Salt Lake City, Nick Schmaltz scored twice and the Utah Mammoth beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-3 on Tuesday night, clinching the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Schmaltz opened the scoring for Utah 4:54 into the second period on the power play, with Mikhail Sergachev and Dylan Guenther earning assists, and added another power-play goal 7:16 into the third, assisted by Logan Cooley and Clayton Keller. JJ Peterka, Alexander Kerfoot and Logan Cooley also scored, and Karel Vejmelka made 21 saves to earn the victory. Salt Lake City, Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor each had a goal and an assist and Isak Rosen also scored for the Jets, while Eric Comrie made 31 saves in the loss as Winnipeg dropped its third straight game. Gabriel Vilardi added two assists. The Mammoth will face the Pacific Division winner — either the Vegas Golden Knights, Edmonton Oilers or Anaheim Ducks — in the first round of the playoffs. Utah will host the St. Louis Blues on Thursday and Winnipeg will host the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.
