Raleigh braces as Charlotte enforcement operations continue

Federal immigration enforcement in North Carolina is poised to expand to Raleigh as soon as Tuesday, Mayor Janet Cowell said, while Border Patrol operations continue in Charlotte after more than 130 arrests. DHS declined to discuss plans; Cowell stressed Raleigh’s lower crime rate and said city police are not involved. Gov. Josh Stein urged agents to focus on violent offenders and warned against targeting people by skin color. Charlotte officials reported roughly 20,935 student absences, about 15% of enrollment, as local leaders condemned the crackdown’s tactics and Republicans faulted past detainer policies and Sheriff Garry McFadden.
