Shutdown intensifies coast to coast flight disruptions

Read, Watch or Listen

Air travel unraveled Monday as controller shortages deepened by the longest-ever U.S. government shutdown forced cuts and cancellations. Cirium counted 1,432 of 25,733 flights scrubbed, about 5.5% and rising, after the administration ordered airlines to reduce schedules at 40 major airports, ramping from 4% last Friday to 10% by Friday, Nov. 14. Trump demanded controllers return "NOW," threatening docked pay and touting $10,000 bonuses for perfect attendance. Over the weekend 18,576 flights were delayed and 4,519 canceled. Airlines offered crew incentives and fee waivers, while union leaders warned fatigue is eroding safety. The Senate reported progress but no bill.
