CNN’s Abby Phillip challenged Donald Trump’s claim that his administration lowered grocery costs, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing food prices rising since August and since his inauguration. She noted year-over-year increases, including coffee up 18.9%, beef up 14.7%, and meat, poultry, fish and eggs up 5.2%. Trump acknowledged beef’s rise and said he’s asking the Justice Department to investigate meatpackers for alleged collusion and price fixing. A CBS News/YouGov poll found 62% say food costs are increasing. Phillip also highlighted a surge in layoffs, more than 150,000 in October, and said affordability is driving voters’ concerns.
