Alex Vesia and his wife, Kayla, announced on Instagram Friday that their daughter, Sterling, died Oct. 26, a loss that kept the Dodgers pitcher from the World Series. The team said he was away for a “deeply personal family matter,” leaving him off the roster to avoid any pressure to return. President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman called it bigger than baseball. Dodgers relievers wrote Vesia’s No. 51 on their caps for the rest of the series, with Blue Jays relievers joining in Games 6 and 7. The Vesias thanked both clubs and fans for the comfort.
