Typhoon Kalmaegi roared across the central Philippines after midnight landfall in Southern Leyte, killing two people and unleashing floods that trapped residents on rooftops and submerged cars, officials said. With sustained winds up to 140 kph and gusts to 195, the storm swept over Bacolod and swamped parts of Cebu, where debris and floating vehicles made rescues impossible. Tens of thousands were displaced, more than 150,000 evacuated, power failed in Southern Leyte, and travel was disrupted as ferries stayed in port and 186 flights were canceled.
