Communities in Hurricane-Ravaged Jamaica Still Cut Off as Death Toll Climbs

Jamaica's death toll from Hurricane Melissa rose to 28 on Saturday, as officials said they have not reached dozens of the hardest-hit communities. The government reported nine newly identified deaths since the previous count of 19, with more possible fatalities under review. The Category 5 storm made landfall Tuesday, leaving most of the country without power or phone service and cutting off western towns by washed-out roads and downed trees. In St. Elizabeth Parish, access is blocked to about 15 communities; at least seven deaths are confirmed there. Haiti reported at least 30 deaths from flooding.
