Hurricane Melissa death toll nears 50, mostly in Jamaica and Haiti, as focus turns to recovery

The northern Caribbean awoke to the roar of cleanup as communities dug out from Hurricane Melissa, blamed for at least 45 deaths, including 19 in Jamaica, at least 25 in Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic. The storm raced past Bermuda with 90 mph winds and is forecast to weaken. Jamaica faces roofless homes, severed roads and long lines as relief flights arrive, helicopters drop aid and more than 13,000 shelter with power and phone service largely down. Cuba reported no deaths after mass evacuations but heavy damage and outages. Haiti reels from deadly flooding and losses.
