Hurricane Melissa, among the Atlantic’s most powerful in more than 150 years, carved a destructive path through Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas, leaving at least 30 dead as it moved toward Bermuda. The storm exploded to 185‑mph Category 5 strength, slamming Jamaica before crossing eastern Cuba and driving torrential rain, damaging winds and dangerous surge in the Bahamas. Jamaica declared a disaster area; 77% lost power and communities were cut off as crews cleared debris. Haiti reported 23 deaths and 13 missing. Governments launched evacuations and relief, while the UK, China and the United States mobilized assistance.
