Air Traffic Controllers Miss Pay as Delays Rise

Read, Watch or Listen

Air traffic controllers missed their first full paychecks since the shutdown began at the start of the month, as flight delays tied to staffing shortages climbed, officials said Tuesday. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said staffing caused 44% of delays Sunday and about 24% Monday, versus roughly 5% earlier this year. Union leader Nick Daniels said problems are mounting. Duffy added that training and recruiting are being hurt and trainee stipend funds are nearly exhausted. Controllers have taken side jobs. Union members planned leafleting to urge travelers to press Congress to end the shutdown, now entering its fourth week.
