A 13-year-old boy lost part of his bowel after swallowing 80–100 high-powered magnets, according to a New Zealand Medical Journal case report. After four days of abdominal pain, scans showed four chains of magnets in his bowel and large intestine, disrupting imaging and prompting exploratory surgery. Surgeons found pressure necrosis, removed the magnets, and he recovered, leaving hospital after eight days. Although such magnets are banned for sale in New Zealand, they are easily bought online; the boy said he purchased them on Temu. Temu expressed regret, began an internal review, and said non-compliant listings will be removed.
