A major AWS outage rippled across the internet Monday, knocking out or slowing services from Venmo, Snapchat, Canva and Fortnite and even hobbling Alexa. Amazon traced the disruption to a DNS resolution issue affecting the DynamoDB API in the US-EAST-1 region; it says the DNS problem was fully mitigated at 2:24 AM PDT, but lingering failures launching new EC2 instances continue to cause elevated errors. As of 1:15 PM ET, many apps remained unavailable or sluggish, with outage reports spiking on Down Detector and sites like Reddit posting status updates.
