Dr. Jane Goodall, the pioneering primatologist and chimpanzee advocate, died at 91 while on a speaking tour in California, The Jane Goodall Institute announced Oct. 1. TMZ, citing a Los Angeles County death certificate, reported cardiac arrest; the institute said natural causes. Born in London in 1934, Goodall launched more than six decades of groundbreaking chimp research in 1960 in what is now Tanzania and later became a fixture on television. This year, President Joe Biden awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom; the 2017 film Jane won major honors.
