Interstate 5 temporarily reopens but gridlock reigns through Camp Pendleton

Officials reopened a 17-mile stretch of I-5 near Camp Pendleton but warned of afternoon delays as live-fire artillery will arc over the freeway during a Marine Corps event. CHP said it will run traffic breaks during firing, after earlier gridlock and risky turnarounds near El Camino Real. The state announced a closure from Harbor Drive to Basilone Road, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Amtrak paused midday service. Gov. Gavin Newsom blasted the White House’s planning; Marines said the closure isn’t needed and the exercise is safe, with rounds expected about 1:30 p.m. Detours were issued by Caltrans.
