A US Marines 250th-anniversary celebration will close a 17-mile stretch of Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton from 11am to 3pm Saturday as 155mm live rounds are fired over the area, the CHP said. The Marines plan a live-fire amphibious showcase at Red Beach and say the event follows safety protocols. California governor Gavin Newsom blasted the plan as dangerous and politically intimidating, while Caltrans said the White House-directed event required the shutdown for public safety. JD Vance and defense secretary Pete Hegseth will speak. A Vance spokesperson called the concern misleading and said the activity is routine training.
