NYC Mayoral Debate Sparks Clashes Over Affordability, Israel | JQJO

At a combative first debate, Democrat Zohran Mamdani, independent Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa traded barbs over Israel, affordability, and President Trump. Cuomo cast Mamdani as a democratic socialist with little experience; Mamdani replied that he values integrity and recognizes Israel’s right to exist, but not any state built on hierarchy by race or religion. Affordability dominated, and a CBS News poll showed Mamdani leading, especially among cost‑of‑living voters. None endorsed Kathy Hochul, and all declined to support a possible Trump move to send National Guard troops. Moments included breakfast chatter and Mamdani’s blush over a cannabis purchase.
