Doctors Without Borders Shuts Port-au-Prince Emergency Care Center

Read, Watch or Listen

Doctors Without Borders has permanently closed its Port-au-Prince emergency care center amid ongoing violence in a capital now 90% controlled by gangs. The Turgeau facility, which temporarily closed in March after gunmen fired on four MSF vehicles, has been struck by stray bullets, making care too dangerous, the group said. More than 60% of the capital’s health facilities, including the general hospital, are closed. From January to June, the U.N. reports over 3,100 killed and 1,100 injured, while displacement hit 1.4 million and makeshift shelters grew to 238.
