Kanchha Sherpa, the last surviving member of the team that first summited Mount Everest, died at 92 at his home in Kathmandu on Thursday after a period of illness, according to the Associated Press. Nepal Mountaineering Association president Phur Gelje Sherpa said, “He passed away peacefully at his residence. A chapter of the mountaineering history has vanished with him.” At 19, Kanchha helped Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reach the summit in 1953, escorting them to the last camp. He later warned about overcrowding and trash on Everest. He is survived by his wife and six children.
