California Gov. Gavin Newsom urged the House Oversight Committee to investigate Young Republican leaders after recently revealed group chats praised Hitler, invoked “gas chambers,” endorsed rape, and used racist phrases. In a letter to Chair James Comer, he called the messages a potential civil-rights violation and accused Republicans of hypocrisy for targeting Harvard while downplaying their own. The Young Republicans’ national board demanded resignations. Vice President JD Vance dismissed the outrage as kids’ “edgy” jokes, prompting Newsom to say only Congress can ensure accountability. The committee has not responded.
