Texas state Rep. Gina Hinojosa announced a 2026 gubernatorial bid, entering the Democratic primary to take on Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. In a launch video, the 51-year-old Latina attorney casts her campaign as a fight against “billionaires and corporations,” pledging to prioritize schools and health care, and invoking her grandmother’s “No te dejes.” She kicks off Wednesday in Brownsville. Hinojosa has tangled with Abbott over school vouchers and joined colleagues in leaving the state to stall redistricting. Abbott’s campaign labeled her “radical,” touting border security, safer communities, and “family values.” No Democrat has won statewide in Texas since 1994.
