Remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska on Sunday with hurricane-force winds and catastrophic flooding, ripping houses from foundations and sweeping some away. Rescue aircraft reached Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, where at least 18 and 16 people were saved, respectively. Authorities reported up to 20 people possibly unaccounted for, including three still missing in Kwigillingok as of Sunday evening; figures for Kipnuk were unconfirmed. More than 170 sheltered overnight in Kipnuk as water rose 6.6 feet above the highest tide, and at least eight homes were lost. The Alaska National Guard was activated as the governor expanded a disaster declaration.
