Top New York Democrats closed ranks around Attorney General Letitia James a day after her indictment on bank-fraud and false-statement charges tied to a mortgage. Chuck Schumer called the case outrageous, and Gov. Kathy Hochul and NYC candidate Zohran Mamdani accused the president of weaponizing the Justice Department. Former federal prosecutor Jessica Roth said targeting perceived political enemies is extremely distressing and noted such intent-based crimes are hard to prove. James, who denies wrongdoing, is due in Virginia court Oct. 24. DOJ backed Trump-appointed U.S. attorney Lindsey Halligan; she said no one is above the law.
