Chinese doctors have achieved a milestone in xenotransplantation by successfully transplanting a genetically modified pig liver into a 71-year-old man. The patient lived 171 days post-procedure, with the pig organ functioning for 38 days. This peer-reviewed study, published in the Journal of Hepatology, demonstrates the potential of pig livers as a life-saving bridge for patients awaiting human transplants, despite the complexity of the organ.
