A new study reveals that chimpanzees in Uganda and Côte d'Ivoire consume fruit containing naturally occurring alcohol, equivalent to about two human alcoholic beverages daily. Researchers measured ethanol levels in figs and plum-like fruits, finding an average of 0.3% alcohol by weight. While chimps don't get drunk, the consistent low-dose exposure supports the 'drunken monkey' hypothesis, suggesting our attraction to alcohol may stem from ancestral fruit-eating habits. The study provides the first direct measurements of ethanol in wild chimp diets, adding to evidence of alcohol consumption in various animals.
