Former President Trump revealed efforts to regain control of Bagram Air Base from the Taliban, a move initiated months ago. Trump cited strategic importance for surveillance of China, access to resources, counterterrorism, and potential diplomatic use. This objective necessitates a US military presence, contradicting his 2020 withdrawal agreement. While the Taliban's response remains unclear, Trump suggests leverage exists. He contrasts his approach with the Biden administration's 2021 withdrawal, deeming it a mistake.
