Two Canadian satellites failed in 1994 due to a solar storm causing electrical discharges. New research from Los Alamos National Laboratory reveals a direct link between electron flux in space and electrical discharges on satellites. Sensors on STP-Sat6 detected 272 high-rate discharges, each following peaks in electron activity. This discovery, published in Advances in Space Research, could lead to forecasting tools to protect satellites from space weather.
