Japan Proposes New Economic Zone for Africa

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba proposed a new economic zone connecting the Indian Ocean to Africa at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). This initiative aims to boost Japanese investment and free trade in Africa, particularly as US influence wanes and China's grows. Japan pledges $5.5 billion in loans and AI training programs to support sustainable development and address Africa's debt issues. The summit, attended by leaders from about 50 African countries, emphasizes economic growth, peace, and addressing the digital divide. A "Yokohama declaration" outlining the summit's outcomes is expected Friday.
