Deadly flesh-eating bacteria spread across beaches... as cases surge in terrifying rise

Cases of flesh-eating Vibrio vulnificus bacteria are surging along US coasts, particularly in the Gulf states and North Carolina. Warming waters and increased flooding are contributing factors, spreading the bacteria northward. The bacteria, found in coastal and brackish waters, infects through open wounds or raw seafood. Symptoms range from mild illness to severe necrotizing fasciitis, requiring amputation in extreme cases. Death rates are high, especially in those with compromised immune systems. Health officials urge caution, particularly in warm waters.
