FDA Recommends Ban on Potent Kratom Derivative

U.S. health officials are recommending a nationwide ban on 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a kratom derivative found in energy drinks and supplements. The FDA considers 7-OH a potent opioid, more powerful than morphine, posing a risk of addiction and overdose. This follows recent FDA warnings to companies selling 7-OH-infused products. While some in the kratom industry support the ban, others oppose further regulation of kratom. The DEA will review the FDA's recommendation to place 7-OH on the most restrictive list of illegal drugs, a process that could lead to a federal ban.
