Researchers used virtual reality to simulate contagious individuals and observed immune system responses in participants. Exposure to avatars displaying signs of infection triggered a faster reaction time and increased activity in brain regions associated with threat detection and the hypothalamus, a key immune regulator. Blood tests revealed activation of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), early responders in the immune system. While the study demonstrates a link between perceived infection and immune response, further research is needed to determine if this response effectively combats actual infection.
