Google's Android Earthquake Alerts (AEA) system failed to adequately warn millions in Turkey during the February 2023 earthquake. While ten million people within 98 miles of the epicenter could have received the highest alert, only 469 "Take Action" warnings were sent for the first quake. Half a million received a lower-level warning. Google acknowledges the system's shortcomings and says it is continuously improving. The failure is particularly concerning given the devastating impact of the earthquake and the system's potential to save lives with timely, high-level alerts.
