General Motors and LG Energy Solution's Ultium Cells are upgrading their Spring Hill, Tennessee facility to produce cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells for electric vehicles. These LFP cells, expected to begin production by late 2027, will utilize less expensive materials than traditional lithium-ion batteries. This complements GM's existing high-nickel battery production and expands their EV offerings. The upgrade builds on their $2.3 billion investment in the plant, although the cost of the upgrade wasn't disclosed. GM also announced a $900 million investment in new battery development labs in Michigan.
