President Trump's comments about alligators attacking immigrants escaping a new Florida detention center echo a century-old racist trope. His jokes, and subsequent "Alligator Alcatraz" merchandise from the Florida Republican Party, draw parallels to Jim Crow-era propaganda depicting Black people as alligator bait. This imagery, used to dehumanize and justify violence against African Americans, raises concerns about the potential for similar harm towards immigrants at the new facility.
