Penn Modifies Lia Thomas Records, Apologizes to Female Athletes

The University of Pennsylvania has agreed to a settlement with the U.S. Education Department, modifying three school swimming records set by transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. The department investigated Penn for violating the rights of female athletes, concluding the university's policies disadvantaged them. As part of the settlement, Penn will restore records to female athletes who lost to Thomas, issue apologies, and adopt a biology-based definition of sex for athletic participation. The agreement follows the NCAA's updated policy limiting transgender women's participation in women's sports. Education Secretary Linda McMahon hailed the settlement as a victory for women and girls.
