A new study suggests bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), which measures body fat percentage, is a more accurate predictor of mortality risk than BMI, especially in younger adults. BMI, while useful on a population level, can misclassify individuals, particularly those with "skinny fat." BIA uses electrical currents to assess body fat, lean muscle mass, and water weight, offering a more comprehensive picture. Researchers found high body fat, as measured by BIA, significantly increased mortality risk, while BMI did not show a similar correlation in younger participants. While more expensive than BMI, clinic-based BIA offers a potentially valuable tool for early health intervention.
