French scientists have identified a new, 48th blood type, dubbed "Gwada negative," in a woman from Guadeloupe. The discovery, officially recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion, stemmed from a 2008 blood sample. A unique antibody detected then, combined with recent advancements in DNA sequencing, revealed a genetic mutation. The woman is currently the only known carrier of this blood type, inheriting the gene from both parents. Researchers are now searching for others with this rare blood type to improve care for those with uncommon blood groups.
